Sampling methods

Sampling refers to the process of selecting a group of people to be interviewed in a study. It involves replacing targets with a carefully selected sample of people. Sampling allows for large-scale surveys and any type of study targeting populations of various sizes.

This method has the advantage of optimizing the management of survey resources and efforts. Interviewers are less constrained by timing and cost because the analysis is conducted with a defined number of people. For a successful survey, the choice of the sample of individuals to be interviewed is crucial. Indeed, the quality of the data obtained depends largely on the quality of the sample itself.

In addition, the sample size and sampling method used must be recorded in the survey design and report. This allows the validity of the results to be measured in terms of confidence intervals or margins of error.

Depending on the needs, there are currently two main families of sampling methods:
– random or probability methods: we speak of representative samples,
– reasoned or non-probabilistic methods: which are non-representative samples.
